Expansion of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin

The Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) aims to provide affordable housing for the rural population in India. Under this scheme, beneficiaries receive financial assistance of Rs. 1.20 lakh for houses in plain areas and Rs. 1.30 lakh for those in North Eastern and Hilly States, including the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

Funding Structure

The funding pattern varies based on the geographical classification of states:

  • North Eastern and Himalayan States (Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir): 90% Central Government and 10% State Government.
  • Other States: 60% Central Government and 40% State Government.
  • Union Territories without Legislature: 100% funding from the Central Government.

Since the inception of PMAY-G on April 1, 2016, the Ministry has released a total central share of Rs. 2,49,569.76 crore to various States and Union Territories.

Additional Support for Beneficiaries

Beyond the unit assistance, PMAY-G beneficiaries are entitled to 90 to 95 man-days of unskilled labor wages through mandatory convergence with the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). Furthermore, beneficiaries receive an additional support of Rs. 12,000 for toilet construction, which can be sourced from the Swachh Bharat Mission – Gramin (SBM-G), MGNREGS, or other dedicated funding sources.

Future Implementation Plans

In a significant move, the Union Cabinet has approved a proposal for the implementation of PMAY-G for the fiscal years 2024-25 to 2028-29. This initiative aims to construct an additional 2 crore rural houses, with a total outlay of Rs. 3.06 lakh crores, thereby expanding the reach and impact of the housing scheme in rural areas across India.

This expansion reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing the living conditions of rural populations and ensuring that every family has access to adequate housing.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Rural Development Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today.
