Old pension scheme restored for Chhattisgarh govt employees
A total of 2.56 lakh employees constituting 84% chose the OPS, prompting the Bhupesh Bhagel-led govt to urge the central government for its share of Rs 17000 crore, since Nov 2005. But the Centre has refused to do so.
The Old Pension Scheme or OPS has become an electoral favourite ever since the Congress won the Himachal Pradesh elections in November 2022, riding on the pension plank. Congress followed the same mantra in the southern state of Karnataka too, where it sympathetically offered to consider the restoration of OPS.
However, Chhattisgarh was the first Congress-ruled state in the country to have implemented the scheme in April 2022, after issuing the notification in January. The state govt had given three lakh state govt employees an option to choose between the NPS (National Pension Scheme) and OPS.
A total of 2.56 lakh employees constituting 84% chose the OPS, prompting the Bhupesh Bhagel-led govt to urge the central government for its share of Rs 17000 crore, since Nov 2005. Union minister Nirmala Sitharaman refused to do so and landed the state govt employees in hot soup.
