CONSUMER PRICE INDEX NUMBERS ON BASE 2012=100 FOR RURAL, URBAN AND COMBINED FOR THE MONTH OF MAY 2024

I. Key highlights:

Year-on-year inflation rate based on all India Consumer Price Index (CPI) number is 4.75% (Provisional) for the month of May, 2024. Corresponding inflation rate for rural and urban is 5.28% and 4.15%, respectively.

All India inflation based on General CPI is lowest for the month of May 2024 after May 2023. It is less than 6% since September 2023.

‘Spices’ has shown a considerable decline at sub-group level in year-on-year inflation as compared to April 2024. Among the groups, inflation corresponding to ‘Clothing & Footwear’, ‘Housing’ and ‘Miscellaneous’ has decreased since last month.

Response rate: The price data are collected from selected 1114 urban Markets and 1181 villages covering all States/ UTs through personal visits by field staff of Field Operations Division of NSO, MoSPI on a weekly roster. During the month of May 2024, NSO collected prices from 100.0% villages and 98.5% urban markets while the market-wise prices reported therein were 89.2% for rural and 92.7% for urban.

Next date of release for June 2024 CPI is 12th July 2024 (Friday). For more details please visit the website www.mospi.gov.in
