The second phase was approved in March 2018, and the third phase, Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA), was launched in June 2023. The scheme focused on educationally underserved areas.

(a) whether the Government has any Centrally Sponsored Educational Scheme(s) for the improvement of Higher Education in the country;
(b) if so, the details thereof;
(c) the number of institutions benefited by such schemes of Higher Education during each of the last five years, State-wise; and
(d) the targets fixed and achieved during the said period under these schemes?

(a) & (b): Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) was a Centrally Sponsored Scheme aimed at funding the specific State government universities and colleges, so as to improve the overall quality of existing state higher educational institutions by ensuring their conformity to prescribed norms and standards. The 2nd phase of the scheme was approved in March 2018 and the third phase of RUSA in the form of Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA) was launched in June 2023 with an outlay of Rs. 12926.10 crore for the period 2023-24 to 2025-26 to cater to needs of educationally unserved/underserved areas.
(c) The number of units approved under the scheme State-wise and year-wise in the last five years since 2018-19 to 2022-23 under RUSA is available at Annexure-I.
(d) The details of targets fixed and approved under different components of RUSA in the last five years since 2018-19 to 2022-23 are available at Annexure-II.
