Will the Minister of Education be pleased to state:

(a) whether Government has taken note of the fact that many fake/non- recognized/self-recognised Institutes/Universities are running in the country;

(b) if  so,  the  details  thereof,  State/UT-wise  including  Rajasthan,  Madhya  Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh; and

(c) the action taken or proposed to be taken by Government against the operators of such Universities and the time by which these Universities are totally closed?

(a) & (b): The State/UT wise details of fake universities are available at the University Grants Commission (UGC)’s website https://www.ugc.gov.in/page/Fake-Universities.aspx. The UGC has informed that presently, 20 institutions figure in the list of fake universities/ institutions.

(c): The Central Government as well as the UGC are taking various steps to protect the innocent students from the trap of such Universities/Institutions, which inter-alia include:

• Public Notices about this are uploaded in UGC website to caution students, guardians and the public at large about such institutions.
• From time to time, the UGC writes letters to Chief Secretaries and Education Secretaries of respective State/UT Governments to take action against fake universities/institutes located in their jurisdiction.
• UGC has filed FIRs against some of these fake universities.
• UGC has issued show-cause/ warning notices against such self-styled institutions.
• In addition, the Ministry has also requested the Chief Secretaries of all State/UT Governments to take appropriate action against those involved in defrauding and cheating students by misrepresenting themselves as “Universities”, awarding degrees and using the “University” with their name.
