Tax relief on arrears
Due to the increase in dearness allowance, not only the salary of the employees has increased but they have also got the benefit of arrears. For example, the central government announced an increase in dearness allowance or DA in March 2023, but the increased dearness allowance came into effect only from January 2023. In such a situation, the employees were given arrears in lieu of previous months. The same is the case with employees in all states where DA has been increased.

Work of central employees increased with arrears
Although all the employees have benefited due to the accumulation of arrears in the account, some works have also increased along with it. The month of July has started and all the beneficiary employees have time till the end of the month for this important work. At this time, the deadline for filing income tax return is 31st July and there is not much scope to extend it. Hence, the employees who have received arrears will have to claim tax relief. According to Section 89 of the Income Tax Act, government employees get the facility to claim tax relief on payment of arrears.
