ANSWER
THE MINISTER OF STATE FOR JAL SHAKTI
(SHRI PRAHLAD SINGH PATEL)
(a) & (b) Since August 2019, Government of India, in partnership with State Governments, is implementing Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM)-Har Ghar Jal to enable every rural household in the country to have assured potable water through tap water connection by 2024.
At the time of announcement of Jal Jeevan Mission, 3.23 Crore (17%) rural households were reported to have tap water connections. So far, more than 7.81 Crore rural households have been provided with tap water connections in last three and half years. Thus, as on 30.01.2023, out of 19.36 Crore rural households in the country, around 11.04 Crore (57%) households are reported to have tap water supply in their homes.
To ensure the successful implementation, Government of India has been regularly reviewing the planning and implementation with all States/ UTs. Regular review meetings at highest level inter alia including Union Ministers, Chief Ministers of the States, Cabinet Secretary, Chief Secretaries and Secretary in charge in respective States/ UTs including conferences, workshops, video conferences, are held as well as field visits of multi-disciplinary teams are taken up wherein States are advised to plan and expedite the implementation to achieve the goal in a time- bound manner.
(c) & (d) The Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India is not planning to introduce water quality index because the standard for safe drinking water is set by Bureau of Indian Standards in its BIS-10500:2012 as amended from time to time.
