MBBS SEATS IN MEDICAL COLLEGES

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:
(a) the number of MBBS seats allotted to Government and private medical colleges in the country, State/UT/ college-wise including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh;
(b) the details of the Government and private medical colleges set up in the country during each of the last five years;
(c) whether the seats in existing medical colleges of various States are proposed to be increased, particularly in the above said States;
(d) if so, the details thereof; and
(e) the steps taken/proposed to be taken by the Government to fulfill the requirement of doctors as per the population in the country, State/UT-wise?

STATEMENT REFERRED TO IN REPLY TO LOK SABHA STARRED QUESTION NO. 91* FOR 22ND JULY, 2022
(a) & (b) As informed by the National Medical Commission, there are 612 Medical Colleges with 91927 MBBS seats. The details are at Annexure-I. The details of the Government and private colleges set up in the country during the last five years are at Annexure-II.
(c) & (d) Under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for ‘Up-gradation of Government Medical Colleges for increase of MBBS seats in existing medical colleges’, 3495 MBBS seats have been approved in 16 States/UTs. Details are at Annexure III.
Under Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for ‘Strengthening and upgradation of State Government medical colleges for starting new PG disciplines and increasing PG seats’, 5930 seats have been approved in 22 States/UTs in 2 Phases. Details are at Annexure IV.
Further under the Central Sector Scheme for “Upgradation of Government Medical College by construction of Super Specialty Blocks”, approximately 1000 Post graduate seats have been made available.
(e) Government has taken various steps to increase the availability of Undergraduate and Post graduate Seats:-
i. Centrally Sponsored Scheme for establishment of new medical college by upgrading district/ referral hospital under which 157 new medical colleges have been approved and 72 are functional.
ii. Centrally Sponsored Scheme for strengthening/ upgradation of existing State Government/Central Government Medical Colleges to increase MBBS and PG seats.
iii. Central Sector Scheme for “Upgradations of Government Medical College by construction of Super Specialty Blocks” . A total of 75 projects have been approved
iv Under Central Sector Scheme for setting up of new AIIMS, 22 AIIMS have been approved. Undergraduate courses have started in 19 AIIMS.
v. Relaxation in the norms for setting up of Medical College in terms of requirement for faculty, staff, bed strength and other infrastructure.
vi. DNB qualification has been recognized for appointment as faculty to take care of shortage of faculty.
vii. Enhancement of age limit for appointment/ extension/ re-employment against posts of teachers/dean/principal/ director in medical colleges upto 70 years.
