VACANCIES IN MEDICAL COLLEGES

Will the Minister of HEALTH AND FAMILY WELFARE be pleased to state:
(a) steps taken to fill up the large number of vacancies in medical colleges in the country, State/UT-wise including Bihar; and
(b) the steps proposed to deal with shortage of equipments and infrastructure in medical colleges?

(a) & (b): As informed by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the following steps have been undertaken to help filling up of various vacancies in medical colleges in the Country including Bihar:
(i) The qualification awarded by the Diplomate of National Board (DNB) through National Board of Examinations (NBE) has been recognized for appointment as faculty to take care of shortage of faculty.
(ii) Enhancement of age limit for appointment/ extension/ re-employment against posts of teachers/ Dean/ Principal/ Director in medical colleges upto 70 years.
(iii) Centrally Sponsored Scheme for strengthening/ upgradation of existing State Government/Central Government Medical Colleges to increase PG seats.
(iv) The ratio of teachers to students has been rationalized to increase the number of postgraduate medical seats in the country.
(v) By amending the regulations, it has been made mandatory for all medical colleges to start PG courses within 3 years from the date of their MBBS recognition /continuation of recognition.
Further, the NMC through Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB) carries out inspections of medical institutions before giving any permission for starting/ renewal/ increase of medical seats in the colleges on parameters including faculties/ equipments and infrastructure.
